A new study urges caution to those who believe that online education is a panacea for educating more community college students. The study finds that students who enrolled in online courses -- controlling for various factors that tend to predict success -- were more likely to fail or drop out of the courses than were those who took the same courses in person. Notably, there was not a gap in completion between those enrolled in hybrid and in-person courses.

Brain: The Inside Story


The brain is quite flexible and resilient, and this online exhibit from the American Museum of Natural History explores both of these traits, along with looking at current research into how the brain works. This website offers a nice complement to the in situ exhibit, and visitors can make their way through five sections, including "Your Sensing Brain", "Your Emotional Brain", and "Your 21st Century Brain". Each of these sections includes short answers to crucial questions about the brain's functions and activities, such as "Why do memories exist?" In the "Videos" area, found on the right hand side of any page, visitors can check out six different clips that document the creation of the physical exhibit as well as topics that include "Thinking in Symbols". Finally, the site is rounded out by a section of materials for educators that include lesson plans and bulletins with titles like "Inside the Teenage Brain".

Carreras en Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Medicina (STEM Careers)

There are many groups and organizations in the United States working to encourage young people to enter STEM-related careers, and this website represents one of those endeavors. The STEM Career website was created by Professor Rich Feller of Colorado State University to help encourage young people to select just such a career path. The website contains updates on STEM career possibilities, and basic answers to questions like "Why STEM?" and "Why STEM Centric Career Development?" Visitors should also scan through the "STEM Disciplines" area on the homepage, as it contains resources about the job outlook for related STEM disciplines, such as biochemical engineering and engineering managers. Moving on, the site also features news updates from Professor Feller and his colleagues on subjects that include the ways in which corporations are promoting STEM education and women in STEM.

The National Endowment for the Humanities has crafted this remarkable library of humanities lesson plans that can be used by educators, students, or the general public - EDSITEment. The lesson plans are divided into topical headings such as "Art & Culture", "Foreign Language", "History & Social Studies", and "Literature & Language Arts". After clicking on one of these topical headings, visitors can search the plans by grade level and lesson plan titles. In the "Foreign Language" area, visitors will find offerings that include "French Connections" and "Charles Baudelaire: Poète Maudit". History teachers will enjoy the "History & Social Studies" area, as it contains a special set of resources for teaching AP history, complete with worksheets and other materials. Finally, there is also a place for lesson plan writers to learn about opportunities for creating materials for the site.

El motor de preguntas, utilizado por ejemplo en los cuestionarios -exámenes, ejercicios de autoaprendizaje, etc.- ha sido completamente renovado para facilitar en el futuro el desarrollo de nuevos tipos de preguntas.
Es posible restaurar copias de seguridad de Moodle 1.9 (con la versión 2.0 no se podía aún).
Permite el uso de temas específicos para dispositivos móviles y añade las funciones necesarias para las aplicaciones iOS y Android que aparecerán próximamente.

A number of presses are hoping so. At a time when many customers are making decisions with one hand on their wallets, academic presses are looking to stoke interest in their electronic versions by offering digital rentals for a reduced price.

For example, instead of buying a paperback or e-book for $20 at the Stanford University Press website, students and scholars can pay $5 to access an e-book for 14 days, or $10 for 60 days.

Changes to the look of Google Calendar

You might have noticed that Google Calendar looks a little bit different. This is the first in a series of changes to make our products more consistent and intuitive so your experience is more enjoyable and productive.

What’s changing

Right now, the changes are just cosmetic and have not affected the way Calendar works. You can choose to turn off the new look by clicking the gear icon and choosing Use the classic look (you can turn it back on by going to the gear icon and choosing Try the new look).
A summary of the current changes are:
  • The Quick add function is now under the down arrow next to the Create button
  • Calendars selected for viewing in your My calendars and Other calendars lists will no longer display with a colored background; instead, only the arrows next to them will be colored.
  • The Print and Refresh buttons are now icons rather than text links. The Print button shows a printer, and the Refresh icon is a circular arrow.
  • Visual indicator icons (alarm clock icon for events with reminders, person icon for events with guests, etc.) will only show when the event is hovered over.
  • The My calendars and Other calendars lists on the left are now collapsed by default and may be expanded using the small gray arrow. Once expanded, they will remain expanded on refresh or open.
  • The mini month view calendar under the Create button is collapsible using the small gray arrow.
  • The Save and Discard buttons and Back to calendar link are only available at the top of the event page, not the bottom.
Over the course of the summer and fall, we’ll make more changes to the look and functionality of Google Calendar. You’ll see these changes in your account in a variety of products, and we’ll make sure to keep you updated as we introduce these changes.

Why we made these changes

The way people use and experience the web is evolving, and our goal is to give you a more seamless and consistent online experience -- one that works no matter which Google product you’re using or what device you’re using it on. The new Google experience that we’re working toward is founded on three key design principles:

Local support for online learners with possible learning disabilities


This article reports from a research study concerning online distance study for competence development of vocational rehabilitation clients. The students included in the study are adults with health problems participating in a rehabilitation process to re-enter into working life. As a group the students are characterized by difficulties, problems and diagnoses that for many represent learning disadvantages. The study examines the results of combining individual online distance learning with support organized by a local vocational rehabilitation enterprise. In this article student support refers to all kinds of non-academic services and help to students, and does not include any face-to-face teaching or tutoring. The amount and type of local support given and how it has been experienced by the individual student may vary between the different enterprises, dependent on their budgets, number of students in the learning room, types of programmes studied and individual needs of the local students.

The study indicates that online line study with adequate local support may constitute a good solution for this target group. Both case handlers in the Welfare and Labour Administration, local counselors and the students themselves report positive experiences with the learning solution examined. Statistics on completions and withdrawals demonstrate that the group of potentially disadvantaged learners achieve well in online study when they receive sufficient social, technical and practical support.

Blackboard adquirido por Providence Equity Partners

This post marks the end of a self-imposed quiet period while Blackboard’s Board of Directors considered “strategic alternatives” for the company. As a member of the company’s senior management team I was understandably asked not to speak freely on the topic, so I held my tongue until I could share something more substantive.

First, I’ll confirm the news: Subject to shareholder approval and regulatory reviews, we have agreed to be acquired by an investor group led by Providence Equity Partners, a private equity firm with a portfolio of education companies and a great expertise in our industry. We expect the deal to be finalized later this year. Details can be found in our press release. Until the deal closes we continue to operate as a public company. Following the deal we continue to operate as Blackboard Inc., but as a privately held company.

Second, some perspective on the financial underpinnings and their implications. Since 2004, Blackboard stock has been publicly traded, with shares owned by some thousands of holders, with the highest concentration of shares held by a few dozen institutional investors. The focus of most institutional investors is predictable revenue, and rock-steady growth. And so we made best efforts to respond to them accordingly, with precision focus on our quarter-to-quarter earnings and on the impact of our business decisions against analysts’ investment models for our stock. Our care was rewarded, and this public form of ownership benefitted Blackboard well over these last seven years and allowed us to better scale our offering to clients.

Private equity now provides us an alternative ownership model that’s more agile. For starters, firms like Providence include very experienced investors willing to hold highly concentrated portfolios. They’re often willing to take longer-term perspectives and assist management in capitalizing on the most strategic opportunities for growth and impact in their industries. Providence brings a deep bench in understanding of the global education marketplace, and arrives to the fight very well informed about today’s market dynamics.

It’s natural that news of this magnitude would raise questions for our clients. Will there be sudden changes to policy, pricing, or strategy? It is our plan that the key strategies that brought us here will continue to guide our path. Critical to our success in recent years has been our focus on Blackboard’s performance on the fundamentals, sustaining the steady improvements we’re making in support responsiveness, openness, transparency, and quality. I envision no change in our underlying commitment to these fundamentals. And I’ll reassure you that we expect our pricing practices to remain within historical norms for the foreseeable future.

Providence shares our vision of improving the education experience for our clients, and of the mission critical role our platforms and services play in teaching and learning today. While we’ve yet to fully explore alignment of our ideas, we begin with similar macro views about Blackboard’s prospects and the broad scope of our future opportunity to help create education impact. I think it’s fair to say there’s strong shared belief in the importance of mobile education and a growing institutional demand for analytics. It’s also fair to say both parties believe K-12 and global markets deserve investment, and provide strong potential growth for Blackboard. Finally, we’ve discovered alignment in views about the importance of the shift from print to digital education content, and that Blackboard can catalyze this trend to the benefit of our clients.

So I think this is a positive development for our clients, and a positive one for Blackboard. In the end our job is to balance interests of both our clients and investors, and these balances are best achieved with a view to the long run. I’m confident that the new arrangement will improve our alignment, and provide us both improved agility and additional wisdom in confronting what comes along the way.
