"Have you ever wondered what the various parts of a guitar are called? Perhaps you need a refresher on the various types of dresses? The Visual Dictionary website covers both topics in copious detail, along with offering up information on transportation, biology, and the human body. Essentially, the site offers annotated images that identify each part of a given item, such as an automobile or a musical instrument. Visitors can search the site by using the embedded search engine or they can look over a list of topics. The coverage is quite broad, as users will find everything from the detailed anatomy of a turtle to an exploration of a car's engine."

"The research examined 658 final grades from six semesters. Students who attended the hybrid course received final grades that were 10% higher than those who attended the traditional class, which translated to a full letter grade increase."

Una forma de mentoría

"Accepting his 2008 TED Prize, author Dave Eggers asks the TED community to personally, creatively engage with local public schools. With spellbinding eagerness, he talks about how his 826 Valencia tutoring center inspired others around the world to open their own volunteer-driven, wildly creative writing labs. But you don't need to go that far, he reminds us -- it's as simple as asking a teacher "How can I help?" He asks that we share our own volunteering stories at his new website, Once Upon a School."

Online Education Database

The Online Education Database (OEDb) currently contains reviews of 1,033 programs from 87 accredited online colleges. Unlike other leading online education directories, this database only lists accredited online colleges so that you can be sure that these degrees will be respected by potential employers. The database allows you to sort reviews by program, college, or degree level. The library section will educate you on the basics of online universities.

Casas publicadoras demandan a Georgia State University

"In a complaint filed Tuesday in United States District Court in Atlanta, the publishers — Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press and Sage Publications — sued four university officials, asserting “systematic, widespread and unauthorized copying and distribution of a vast amount of copyrighted works” by Georgia State, which the university distributes through its Web site."

Blackboard: rechazadas sus patentes por USPTO

"There have been some shockers in the electronic learning world in the last month or so. First, Blackboard won its patent infringement suit against rival Desire2Learn. Then, soon after, the patent itself was rejected by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on reexamination (though that action is not final). But despite the setback in the Patent Office, Blackboard is vowing not to go down without a fight even as Desire2Learn and the Software Freedom LawCenter--the two groups that sought to have the patent revoked--celebrate victory."

Persistence in Online Classes: A Study of Perceptions among Community College Stakeholders

"Because online learning presents unique challenges for not only learners but faculty and administrators as well, those involved in these cyber-environments must think beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom. This study examined the perceptions of online persistence factors, those characteristics which influence student retention, as seen by the three major stakeholders in community college distance education programs: administrators, faculty, and students. The purpose of the study was to determine which factors are most important among the three groups and where those perceptions converge since lack of convergence could be a factor resulting in high attrition rates of some online courses. While the results of this study indicated that the perceptions of administrators and faculty are more closely aligned than either is with the students' perceptions, they also show a recognition among all groups of stakeholders of online learning as an evolving phenomenon which requires attention to even the most minute details which are sometimes overlooked, not emphasized, or taken for granted. This recognition indicates a necessary paradigm shift, which will lead to improvements in online learning policy, design, and pedagogy, is in the making. "

"the allocation of funds for technology upgrades and technology support personnel to professional development programs for new and veteran online faculty. Training for college personnel should include attention to principles of adult learning and best practices for online learning. These would include course development strategies which emphasize the need for less rigid, more flexible scheduling options within the courses and careful selection of course activities to eliminate those events which constitute busy work and do not directly impact student learning. Institutions could also use this information as the impetus to ascertain that online students have the same access to resources and student services (i.e., library services, bookstores, financial aid, counseling, etc.) that on-campus students have and that these students are served efficiently. "
